printing technology report

Report into printed materials for ‘Top Note’ award ceremony

I have been asked to investigate three printed products for this occasion: posters, invitations for award winners and important guests and programme sheets for all guests.

Requirements

Posters – should be designed by an art student and imitate the imaginative personality of the award winners work. 30 posters would be adequate for the university site

Invitations – should have a high quality feel to them as this is the most prestigious award the department gives each year. There will be 40 award winners and 25 VIP guests

Programme – only running order and can be mass-produced on A5 paper. 300 should be enough to cover the number of guests expected

Print technology and costs

I have investigated five different print technologies, of which four might be appropriate. I can recommend the following as the best for each product

Letterpress – Would be best for the invitations, as it has a 3D quality tat makes the product look important and extravagant. it can be produced quickly as well. it would require hiring someone who has knowledge of how to use a letter press and owns letterpress printer.
It may be moderately expensive but within the budget I have been given

Intaglio – This would not be suitable because it requires too much skill, it’s very time consuming, requires corrosive chemicals and would be very expensive. However it does create a very artistic looking product

Offset litho or digital printing – this would be more suitable for the programme and posters, the product can easily be designed and drawn on a computer, offset printing will allow for a better looking product with better colour whereas simple digital printing may look cheap but would be easy an quick to produce, neither option should be too expensive but digital would be cheaper so it would be more suitable for the programme

Summary

Poster – offset litho printing should be used , it would cost approximately £50
Programme – digital printing would be suitable, it will cost approximately £15
Invitations – letterpress should be used, it would cost approximately £400
